Astrid Strawn was always on the go. She felt it in her bones, even her mum joked about how she wasn't a silent baby or an obedient toddler by any means. A crawling terror or a rambunctious monster were affectionate names for her and her dirty hands and her loud mouth. Maybe it had to do with being the baby, the youngest in her small, pleasant family or maybe it was just because she had pent up energy and she didn't know how else to get rid of it other than to morph it into trouble. The tomboy nature only grew with age, desperate to keep up with her older brother who was on the second highest pedestal in comparison to their ever present and watchful father. Their mother had her hands full with her. Lady things didn't interest her, unfortunate, but a necessity for their family dinners and parties.
Her interest in play acting came from her endless bout of energy. To keep her from climbing trees and rolling with the horses in the dirt instead of riding them, their parents were approached by a friend from the cinemas with an interest for a small role in a television series. The Worst Witch was an adventure, the biggest game Astrid could think of and she loved it more than her parents had ever anticipated. To play act magic with a bunch of girls she was to this day still friends with, it was like living her best day except she would have preferred more dragon fights and swords. She never saw it as her future career though and honestly, neither did her family. She'd go to college, university, she'd maybe become a teacher or a nurse.
None of that happened. Instead Astrid became fixated on her one movie experience. She was a good student, a lovely daughter, but it became almost an obsession. She lived for old films, black and white, thrillers, romances, french, english, american- she studied scripts and animation. Sure, she still terrorized her surroundings but now it came with a purpose. All that energy may have backfired for her when she turned 13- the year she got her period and the year she found out she was suffering through panic attacks. They came to her when she hit puberty and it was like nothing she had ever experienced before. For the first time, the confident and headstrong young girl was afraid.
She was diagnosed with Panic Disorder two years later, having found out her grandmother had suffered from huge bouts of anxiety and may have gone undiagnosed for years. Her mother was mildly anxious and it's known to pass down in genetics, something she wasn't quite prepared for. Her parents could afford the best of everything and so they got her the best doctors, the best therapists but for awhile none of it mattered. She didn't try for a year, a very depressed, sad, lonely, scared year until she realized this wasn't what she wanted. It was easier to hide away from the world, but she knew the person she was wasn't going to live for this.
It renewed her passion and her love and she started taking her meds and her therapy seriously. Soon her passion reignited again with movies, while her brother's career slowly took off. Her own issues had overshadowed the obvious- her beloved brother was hanging out with a crowd far beyond her own league, with people she didn't recognize, but with music that was actually... good. It was impressive of their parents to try and juggle between both children with high aspirations, but it only made their father more proud to see their children try to rise above the norm. Astrid went to university for two years before she dropped, focusing on the career she was slowly and steadily building.
It wasn't until 2010, after filming Never Let Me Go, based off a book she was absolutely mad about- it was when she really began to feel like she was making a career out of this. And she wanted it. Acting kept her grounded, it kept her focused, it gave her ambition and drive to continue moving forward instead of being held back by the ghosts of her teenage years. She gave her bright smile and she laughed and she loved and it felt right. It wasn't easy- she suffered. Her brother suffered. Fame was not an easy obstacle, it was messy and tangled and so was Brennan. Life is meant to be difficult and painful, but it's better to overcome it than to let them drag you down. She wants happiness for everyone while her family wants the best and her brother wants... whatever he wants. Life is life and she wants to live it.
